The Wisdom of Wilhelm Stekel

On page 188 of The Catcher in the Rye, Mr. Antolini shares the following quote with Holden: "'The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one.'" Say whether you agree or disagree with this definition of maturity, and give an example from real life that shows why you think this.

i agree with this quote that Mr. Antoloni shares with Holden because it shows both sides od Holden being mature and immature. i guess what he was trying to say to Holden is that when your immature you are not noble and when you are mature you are noble. and that you are very responsible for what you do. you know when you are immature people look at you funny, and they dont take you carefully. the mature man has a very humble look on him. and the opposite is not and i guess he could dye slowly because he wants to live. when i was little i always used to be very immature, and always used to fool around in preschool, and a little in 4th grade, but everyone is immature at sometimes because we want to have fun we dont want to be boring but i didnt think that i was going to dye slowly but i guess to holdens persepctive he was going to die because he felt depressed and lonely and he was hiding in a bathroom stall.

I think that his look upon maturity is right because a humble person never tries to think highly about themselves or feels as if they have to work to get others to look at them highly. However, an immature person thinks that they have to do something to make them look mature however they end up looking like a fool or dead as it says in the quote that Mr. Antolini had said.

I don't agree with this deffintion of maturity because it doesn't define maturity. Maturity isn't wether or not your willing to die for a cause, maturity is your ability to handle certain things in a grown developed way. However, i do agree with the message coming across in the quote. It is more mature to live humbly for a cause rather than die nobly for one. For example the the American soldiers who are fighting our wars, a mature soldier would say they would rather live and keep fighting for our country rather than die heroicly.

I agree with Mr. Antolini's definition of maturity. He means that a mature man is someone who is alive to do work for their cause. An immature man is someone who dies for his cause but doesn't contribute his efforts to help sustain and prolong it. An example from real life would be an activist that doesn't support the use of killing animals to wear fur coats. If that person campaigns and protests to stop people from skinning animals for wardrobe, he/she is fighting it out by living. However, if that activist wants to prove a point by dying for her cause, it marks immaturity as believed by Wilhelm Stekel.

I can agree with this definition of maturity. The mature man knows to live life, learn what he admits he doesn't know and keep doing things to add to a cause. The immature boy wants things immediately, swaggers so he LOOKS like he knows and wants to add one huge thing to a cause that may cost him dearly. To be poetic, it's like a butterfly vs. a moth. The butter fly goes through stages until it is beautiful than lives and other may then appreciate its beauty. A moth lives only to find light and a become a part of the light's beauty before disappearing into dust. The trouble is that the young spend too much time worry about being something instead working to be something. I myself would rather live hard than die fast, even if dying secured supposed immortality. Everyone has limited time so it is important to use it rather than bundle it into a roll then shoot the roll. And besides, the "greats" worked for their status and those who dies for their cause aren't always glorious or even deserving. "It is the emptiest tin that rattles the most."

a humble person doesnt try and think highly of themselves just to get recognized. maturity is being reponsible and doing what you are suppossed to do. Being immature is acting childish and irresponsible. an immature person is someone who feels that they have to do something to get recongnized for maturity.

I would agree with this quoete because it goes in relation with what an immature person would act and how a mature person would reasson with something. An immature person would immediatly give off a radical statement such as that they would die for a cause to install the idea that they are loyal and obediant to the person speacking. A more mature person can see that such radical ideas can lead to problems down the road as people would be too hardcore for a reasson if they would be willing to die for it. In my life, I have seen protesters say that they would die for a cause that was originally peacefull. As this idea of giving everything to a cause spreads, people get radical and violence occurs; this is just what happend in the Egyptian riots.

I agree with this quote by Mr.Antoloni. An immature man will fight for a cause and take more risks. A mature man will take a different approach on the situautions he is faced with. He is humble and noble due to the fact that he has been able to learn and move on from the trials he is faced with.

i agree with this quote because nobody can make a difference for a cause when he or she is dead; and think he or she is going to be remembered. From all the past wars that American solders that fought for their country, do we even remember each person that died for that cause. I some what feel guilty for not knowing them, but i will not forget what they done for us.

I don't agree with this definition of maturity because it doesn't define it. Maturity isn't if your willing to die for a cause, but your way of handling certain things. I do however agree with the quotes message. That you are more mature to live for a cause, than die for one.

i agree with this example of maturity because it shows that they have matured and they're willing to do something extreme for something they eith care about or believe in. for a real life example, the people in the army risk their lives for what they believe in, and many die and/or will die to save it.

I agree with this quote. an immature person will take more risks and want to die for doing something so I do agree with that part of it. However i don't agree that a mature person "wants to live humbly for one" i think that you don't have to live humbly in order to be mature. it doesnt depend on humbleness. it depends on your actions and the way you act.

I agree with this definition of maturity. This means that an immature man only wants to die in order to create a name or some sort of reputation for onself while living humbly for a cause is strictly just to help a cause, rather than help a reputation. Immature people usually tend to help themselves, rather than mature people who put others lives before their own. A real life example of this a mature person protesting and bringing an issue somewhere it can be changed or amended, rather than an immature person killing themselves to create a 'point', which ultimately doesn't change the problem.
