"It was enough to make a body ashamed of the human race."

The above quote is the last sentence of chapter 24 of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (page 159 in our text). Huck is expressing his disgust with the dishonesty of the King and the Duke, and also with the gullibility of the townspeople who are so easily deceived and victimized by the traveling frauds.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has numerous motifs that we have not discussed in class, and one of them is shame. Write a short example from this novel or from from real life in which shame is a motivator for someone to do something or not to do something. Be sure to include what the character, person, or people are ashamed of doing or not doing. (50 words minimum).

Huck was ashamed when the duke and the king took the wilks money. So he took the gold and hid it in the coffin to not risk getting caught. He tells Mary where the gold is out of shame for what the duke and the king have done. He feels that she should have the six thousand dollars.

Shame is usually a motivator to do something when people have strong conscience. If they know something is wrong when they do it, it will not stop bothering them unless they do something to fix what they are feeling ashamed about. For instance, if a group of kids play a joke on another kid by hiding something valueable to them, a kid from the group of kids who stole the item might feel ashamed of what they did and tell the person where the item is. This is because they feel bad for what they did wrong and want to fix it as best as they could.Huck also did the same thing by returning the gold to where he thought it really belonged.

Shame motivates people to do the right thing when they know they done something wrong. For Huck, he was shameful for tricking Jim into thinking that their separation in the fog was a dream. Once Jim sees the leaves and dirt on the raft, he realizes Huck is lying. Huck's shame motivates him to apologize to Jim. Huck vows to do ''no more mean tricks'' (91) and concludes he wouldn't have done it if he knew Jim would be hurt.

Shame is a motivator for someone to do something or not to, because if someone has to do something that is frowned upon, it puts them to shame. If you don't do something people people also put shame on you. An example from the book, is when Huck was thinking about turning Jim in back to the towns people. He knows that once his friends and neighbors find out that he has kept Jim secret for a while he will be shamed on. He knows that it is the normal thing to do;turning runaway slaves in. Yet, because of Jim's and Hucks relationship growing into something he never expected he feels as tho it is not right to turn his friend Jim in. Huck wants to be a true friend to Jim, but then again, he doesn't want to be shamed for not doing the right thing as he was taught.

When Jim yells at Huck for playing a trick on him in the fog Huck feels ashamed of himself. When Huck gets yelled at he relizes what he did was wrong and he feels shame and promises not to do anymore bad trick because he knows they are wrong.

Shame makes people want to do the right thing. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn hick feels ashamed of the Duke and the King when they pretend to be the Wilks brothers. The Duke and the King steal their money and gold. Huck feels ashamed and hides the gold from them.

Many organizations and companies use shame as a tool to keep their employees in line and/or to motivate. The military, for instance, builds a person's pride in themselves and their unit through various exercises. They try to instill honor and duty as positive traits every soldier must have to be successful. Soldiers are told that they will bring shame upon themselves and others if they fail. This is something that has been used since the beginning of Western Civilization.
